Benjamin Dickerson is an award winning producer, director and editor. He creates decadent and articulate solutions in the fields of Production, Post-Production, Creative/Technical Direction and Consultation. Benjamin’s unique combination of creativity and technical skill has caught the attention of artist, commercial clients and politicians.
Since moving to Ottawa in November 2010, where Benjamin joined the communications team with the New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP), he has developed professional video solutions that have played a fundamental role in shaping Canada’s discourse.
In preparation for the 2011 Federal NDP Convention, Benjamin developed a video showcase celebrating the accomplishments of New Democrats throughout the party’s fifty-year history. This included major policy successes and the party’s history of strong leadership. Following this much lauded production, Benjamin was invited to co-create a video tribute to the late Jack Layton, a piece that was screened at Layton’s 2011 State Funeral and subsequently carried by national media. The request to participate in this event remains one of his most distinguished and honoured assignments.
Benjamin is currently employed with the Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition where he continues to create original content for both the leader of the party and the New Democrats’ 102 member caucus. His branding and messaging contributions have become indispensable in the identity of the party. Included in this body of work are original broadcast and online content used to great effect in the Federal and Provincial elections. Benjamin continues to create visual materials that define candidates and his work has directly affected the election of New Democrats’ national party leader.
For 10 years, Benjamin worked in Toronto’s creative industry participating in countless projects, learning a variety of roles within the field. Before moving to Canada’s capital city, Benjamin spent 6 years working within nearly every conceivable video or film format and distribution platform. Benjamin speaks fluent spatial resolution, compression, bandwidth and data rates for nearly every video codec in existence.
Benjamin is an intuitive artist who is conversant in the fundamentals art, this includes drawing and painting. As a graduate of OCADU’s Integrated Media program, Ontario’s Canada’s premier school of art and design, Benjamin focused his studies on time based sculpture/installation, kinetic art, performance, video, sound and online art. With the benefit of a formal art education and having worked in a structured, fast-paced and work environment, Benjamin has developed the unique ability to navigate both the technical and artistic demands of his profession.
His design background accounts for his ongoing love affair with After Effects though he is perhaps most skilled as an Apple Certified Level One Final Cut Pro user. To this extent, he has given back to the community, teaching video production and post-production techniques at Centennial College, Carbon Sound & Picture, Trinity Square Video and OCAD.
